Student-led dedicated education unit (DEU) through service-learning improves leadership competence in nursing students
This competence is one of the most valued in the health field and fundamental to ensure that safe and high-quality care is provided. The study led by Dr Marian de Juan and Dr Albert Gallart, researchers in the Department of Nursing, shows how students who practice in education units in a community setting improve their perception of nursing leadership
The project led by De Juan y Gallart aims to demonstrate the feasibility of improving leadership competence perceived by nursing students through an innovative health education strategy, consisting of a specific education unit led by students and based on the service-learning methodology in a community setting.
The article “Enhancing leadership of nursing students through a student-led dedicated education unit in a community setting: A feasibility study”, published in the Journal of Professional Nursing, contains the main conclusions on the feasibility study carried out in three phases, implemented and tested in Barcelona between 2014 and 2019, and in which students in the Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing participated and self-assessed their perceived leadership competence.
The results showed high satisfaction among students, as well as among service users who received health education. Thus, the study promoted by researchers from the UIC Department of Nursing in cooperation with researchers from the University of Montreal, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu de Barcelona, confirms the effectiveness of student-led dedicated education units as an innovative strategy to work on nursing leadership at the university level.
